Funding for Overseas Study

Study abroad is more accessible now than ever before. If you thought you could not afford to study abroad, now is the time to look into the various financial opportunities that exist. In most cases, federal loans, scholarships, and grants can now be applied to your semester or year long study abroad costs. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Services, 615-460-6403, for additional information concerning how to apply your award.

In addition to institutional financial aid, there are some outside scholarship opportunities for study abroad. Here are a few of the most common sources:

Bowman Travel Grants
This award is available for any student participating in a CIEE program to Central or South America, the Caribbean, Asia, or Africa.

Robert B. Bailey III MinorityStudent Scholarships
These awards are available for minority students participating in a CIEE in any region of the world.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
Available to upper-level students who are directly enrolling in a foreign university for one year of study.

National Security Education Program (NSEP)
Scholarship money is available to students studying abroad in areas which pertain to national security interests.

Fulbright Fellowships
For graduating seniors and graduate students support study and research in many fields of study in most regions of the world. For more information consult the Fulbright website at http://www.iie.org/fulbright for up-to-date information.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
A new federal government program providing scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students receiving federal financial aid for university study. The Gilman Awards will provide up to $5,000 for U.S. citizens and U.S. nationals who are undergraduate students to pursue overseas study abroad opportunities worldwide. Rasmussen Scholarship
Awards are generally $300 - $600 and are awarded on the basis of both need and merit. Forms are available in the Office of International Education.
